The artisanal of automation

My perception as a business owner is that market leaders of my generation are very interested in organic products, environmentally friendly trends, etc. Thus, the idea of eco-friendly and, inevitably, artisan¨s products, has permeated at a corporate and technological level. Now, if the process of automatisation is the one dominating the international market, how does craftsmanship fit into all of this?

Timing needs to be perfect when it comes to startups

The process by which digital startups become corporations occurs with their own individual timing, each case is different. This timing corresponds to the context and the solution depends upon what each startup is providing to society. Facebook, for example, was founded in the context of infinite demand because it was Facebook that created the need it is satisfying. The result: a lot of work that had to be done in a short period of time corresponds to the rapid increase in the demand for the Facebook products/services in the last several decades.

Similarly,Twitter introduced a new way of keeping people informed about the world, but not the necessity to be informed. This allowed for a total access to information for everybody with an internet connection.  Fauci wouldn’t have become an international figure so quickly if we had been reading newspapers. So Twitter created a need to be informed immediately. It was a change in the users behaviour, different from Facebook, at another time. Both covered a need created by themselves at a global scale.

Early development is artisanal

How did these, now giant, multinational corporations start?

How did they make those first hundreds or thousands of dollars?

The first step is artisanal (the person working in their garage!) . It’s Zuckerberg coding, Bezos selling a book, Jobs giving a sales pitch to sell a personal computer. And in an innovative way, because these businessmen planted the seed of a necessity that only their own companies could satisfy. If we look at this in the context of a world that is almost entirely about automatization, the number of businesses and business models rising in this digital universe is huge.

And, with time, the concept of “hiring remotely” has turned into “hiring anywhere”, so a sole proprietorship can begin its development to become a small business that, at some point, can evolve into a multinational corporation, but the beginning of everything is artisanal.

Branding, data entry, SEO, lead generation, closing sales, coding, among other tasks that founders needed to do during those years of early development, depending on the nature of the business, are all artisanal.

HIRING!

In an interconnected world, at least in this niche of “automatized” artisans from any point of view, the aforementioned concepts will inevitably need to hire people at some point. Let’s not forget that, just as the internet keeps growing even stronger, so does the interest we take in environmental causes. This is, by no means ,a minor issue, because it is they, the technological artisans, that generate more jobs that will ultimately take a stand against climate change. Digital automation is our present, but we are facing a time in which we will see, sooner than later, the changes of eco-friendly technology and energy restructuring that will co-exist with a society that sees climate change as one of its main worries.
